REGINA (SNN) - The province has said
no sex, please, to a porno promo offered through SaskTel
Max. SaskTel Max subscribers have been receiving a free
preview of the action package, which features channels
dedicated to crime, hunting, fishing, sports, gaming
- and sex. Roxanne Frost said she had no idea the channel
was even there. Last week while flipping through channels
she came across the SexTV channel. "If I hadn't
been doing that that day, I wouldn't have even caught
it," said Frost. "I was like 'What in the
world? What are they doing?'"
Ken Cheveldayoff, the minister responsible
for Crown corporations, said late Monday afternoon the
promotional offer has been pulled. "It's been cancelled,"
he said.
Frost didn't know how long the SexTV
channel was available because she says she wasn't adequately
informed about the offer. She said she would have appreciated
more communication from SaskTel. Frost called her service
provider immediately after discovering the channel and
was not satisfied with its response. She described the
channel as pornographic.
"They said it was on until the
end of May and they're not taking it off," Frost
said before the government cancelled the promo.
SaskTel spokesperson Michelle Englot
said all SaskTel Max households were informed about
the free promotion of the action package via e-mail.
She said SexTV and OutTV - a channel
aimed at the gay and lesbian community - are classified
by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC) as Category 1 and 2 specialty channels.
"Basically as a Class 1 broadcast licence holder,
SaskTel is obligated to offer those (channels) in the
same manner it offers other Category 1 and 2 channels,"
explained Englot. "So we are required to include
them in our theme packs. They have been part of our
theme packs since July 1, 2007." Although she said
households were informed prior to the start of the promotion
Englot was unsure if detailed information on all the
action channels were included in the e-mail transmission.
She explained that the action pack is geared towards
an adult audience.
Englot said SaskTel encourages all parents
to use the free parental lock service to block any channel
they deem inappropriate.
